In all honesty, I recommend to my clients that even if they have permission to leave the United States while a green card application is pending, they should not leave unless it's absolutely necessary. There are many things that could happen while your green card application is pending. There may be appointment schedules that require you to show up at the USCIS facility with little notice. If you're not there to sign certain forms or acquire certain documents, you might miss a deadline with USCIS. Therefore, I usually recommend keeping travel to a minimum if it is avoidable. Once a green card is approved, then you can easily travel on the green card as long as you stay within the traveling restrictions.
